Top 10 Best Horror Movies of 2023 [Bloody Disgusting]
To say it’s been a strange, turbulent year might be a bit of an understatement. Historically, 2023 marks the year of the dual strikes by WGA and SAG-AFTRA, the first time in over 60 years that Hollywood writers and actors went on strike at the same time. While both fought for better working conditions and deservedly won, the work stoppage no doubt plays a large role in the theatrical slate both this year and at least into the next. Through it all, horror continues to thrive. Box office records were shattered and indie darlings and international gems continue to surprise audiences. Of course, it’s in the most turbulent times where horror thrives most; audiences turn to horror for catharsis or release from real world anxieties and fears.

Friday the 13th Special – The Hockey Mask in Films and Other Media [Cultsploitation]
Friday the 13th may be the film series that springs to mind when you think hockey mask, but there are actually a few films out there that had a killer or menacing bad guy wearing a hockey mask before Jason Voorhees donned it in the 1983 film Friday the 13th Part III. However, it seems Jason made the mask popular, as there are way more films that came out after that gave a little nod (or directly ripped off in some cases) to the masked Crystal Lake killer. Below is a list of films in the order they released. See if you can figure out which ones are trying to bank on the popularity of the Friday the 13th series.

Stepping back on board “The Midnight Meat Train” today, it’s clear that this brutal but lyrical short story retains a narrative power that has not been dimmed by time. Shark-bytes – A brief overview of JAWS in the gaming industry [B-Movie Film Vault]
It’s well known that JAWS was a benchmark film: It made director Steven Spielberg a household name, started the Summer blockbuster trend, and ushered in an entire generation of aspiring filmmakers. (e.g. Quentin Tarantino, Robert Rodriguez, M. Night Shyamalan, et al.) It also spawned three sequels (which got increasingly worse), inspired dozens of knock-offs, and led to the creation of numerous games over a variety of platforms and consoles.

The September House [Hellnotes]
This debut novel by Carissa Orlando is an interesting take on a haunted house. The homeowners, a couple who despaired of ever finding their dream home, came across this gorgeous Victorian and snapped it up for a ridiculously low price. Interestingly, the couple wasn’t the least bit curious as to why it was practically being given away—they just knew they wanted it and ignored anything the real estate agent had to say about it. The real estate agent was relieved, to say the least.

Decoys 2 – Alien Seduction (2007) Movie Review [Deadly Doll’s House of Horror]
As you might remember, a few weeks back, I discovered an oddball Canadian sci-fi horror comedy (maybe) about aliens masquerading as sorority sisters with a plan to seduce college boys for breeding purposes. It was weird. Naturally, the fact that it had a sequel that was ONLY available by Netflix disk in the last gasps of Netflix disk air meant I had to have it.
